I had this image in black and white for the longest time, because I felt it was the "proper" thing to do. Then I got a look at it in color again, and I realized that I really do like it much better in color. Artists are always in a hurry to recommend black and white - but I've just never liked it that much. They say that colors are "distracting", and - particularly in fine art nudes - black and white does a better job of emphasizing lines and shapes and light and form. It sounds impressive, but the emotional impact isn't the same for me. Maybe I see differently. Maybe I have different priorities. I don't like to shoot lifeless bodies - objectified forms. Real life is filled with colors, and something about the color of warm skin (as opposed to cold marble) excites the senses. Maybe it's because I don't eschew eroticism. Colorful bodies are evocative of desire, and the goal of fine art is, ostensibly, to sanitize and sterilize and remove the subject from its real world context. Well, that's not my goal. To shape stone into human form is an incredible talent. But stone cannot possess the color and texture of living flesh. A photograph, however, can make a good representation of it. If the beauty of sculpture is its ability to imitate reality, then why should the goal of photography be to imitate sculpture, when it does an even better job of imitating reality?
you are beautiful
I like your skin tones in this version, BnW /can/ work, but it shouldn't always be the 'default' option.
Right. I have to be careful whenever I criticize black and white, because I do use it, and there are times when I do prefer it. They just tend to be few and far between, and I feel like black and white photography gets overhyped - especially in the field of nude art - to the exclusion of color.
Hmm, perfectly sculpted, if you don't mind my saying. ^^
