The right to free speech only protects you from government censorship. If a private entity silences you, they are not violating this right. But are they restricting your freedom of speech? Absolutely! Should they be allowed to? I think so, yes. But should they actually do it? Only with good reason. For example, if you're using your speech as a weapon to harass somebody or intentionally construct a hostile environment. But not just because what you're saying is controversial or unpopular (or somebody doesn't agree with it). Saying that only the government can censor you implies that it's not important for private entities also to respect the philosophical (as opposed to strictly legal) principle of free speech. Especially if they provide a popular platform for self-expression to the public. I would call this a civic responsibility. Because the idea that "if you can't say something here, you can just say it somewhere else" holds less and less water with the fewer places you're allowed to say that particular thing. I shudder to imagine a world where the only one you're allowed to freely speak your mind to is the government. We may as well call that the death of free speech itself.

Very insightful. And I really agree with you. While yes, it isn't censorship in a technical sense, the outcome is the same as if it were. So, really it's merely semantics at that.

What scares me is, how fast and uncritically this happened. All off a sudden we were all communicating through social media, without any critical thought of the consequences of handing our main communication channels to corporate enteties with corporate goals in mind. We simply didn't stop to think, and now we're stuck in the thick of it.
